The Biennale Extra! is the first international biennial devoted to the literary arts: poetry, prose and the essay in their performed, sonic, visual and digital extensions.

Twelve weeks of new work, installations and encounters in Canada — Québec, Ontario and Alberta — in autumn 2027. Then Europe, in 2029 and 2031.

Productions Rhizome

Productions Rhizome initiated the Biennale Extra! and carries the project. The organization produces the Canadian edition and is one of the three operational hubs on which it rests, in Québec City.

Rhizome sits on the tripartite steering committee for the 2027 edition, alongside the Centre Pompidou and UQAM. That committee sets the mandates of the other governing bodies.

Centre Pompidou

Internationally, the Centre Pompidou is the biennial’s founding co-lead. Jean-Max Colard, director of the Service de la parole, serves as artistic director.

The Centre Pompidou sits on the tripartite steering committee for the 2027 edition and extends, within the biennial, the work it has carried out since 2017 through the Extra! — Littérature vivante festival.

Université du Québec à Montréal

Academically and institutionally in Canada, UQAM acts as co-producer and principal partner. It contributes financially to the project, provides spaces on its campus and engages the Galerie de l’UQAM as a presenting partner. It sits on the tripartite steering committee.

UQAM’s École de design is creating the biennial’s visual identity. In 2026, a course is devoted specifically to the event’s brand image, allowing students to develop a complete graphic identity proposal in a real professional context of international scope.

The visual identity used on this site is temporary, pending the outcome of that collaboration.
